Tipsheet F/A-18 Hornet version 3.0.x   How NOT to use your precious F/A-18 CD if you don't need 'm…, but still want to fly the Hornet. (1) After installing F/A-18 Hornet Version 3 from its CD, (2) and after removing the F/A-18 V.3 CD from the CD ROM drive, (3) trying to start this formidable flight simulator, (4) you may be reminded, that the programme CD must be in the drive! To circumvent this cosmetic problem, do the following after installation: (1) Locate your "F/A-18 Hornet 3.0" folder on your hard disk, (2) Make 3 new folders (+n) within this folder. (2.1) The first, called "MOVIES", goes into the 'F/A-18 Hornet 3.0' folder. (2.2) The second is called "HORNET3", may be stored outside this folder. (2.3) The third again called 'MOVIES' is stored into the 'HORNET3' folder. (3) Copy 2 movies from the 'MOVIES' folder on the "HORNET3" CD ROM into the new 'MOVIES' folder in the 'F/A-18 Hornet 3.0' folder on your hard disk. (3.1) Select and copy 'INTRO.MOV' and 'LOGO.MOV' from the CD ROM. (4) Now make aliasses (+m) from both copied movies and put them into the 'MOVIES' folder within the 'HORNET3' folder. Now take care…! (5)  Use Disk Copy 6.1.2 to prepare a disk image of the 'HORNET3' folder on your hard disk. (If you don't have Disk Copy 6.1.2 then GO MACFF or GO MACDEV to locate and download it first. It is using Apple's latest image format for saving space.) (6)  The result looks like this: (7) Now put an alias of "HORNET3.img" in the 'StartUp Items' folder in the System Folder on your startup Hard Disk. (Make sure you have "Disk Copy" available to have this image file opened on startup!) (8) If you restart your Power Macintosh the HORNET.img file will be opened, simulating the F/A-18 v.3 CD ROM volume and waiting for you to start the Hornet flight simulator. If you now start "F/A-18 Hornet 3.0" this programme refers to the faked "CD ROM" (named HORNET3) to look for the MOVIES folder and the two appropriate movies. The only about 3K large HORNET3 imaged disk on your DeskTop comprises aliasses however, referring to your hard disk's Hornet folder and the folders and files there in. Faked CD volume on DeskTop  Now you can save your CD ROM from wear and tear, but at the expense of missing all your classroom instruction movies! If you don't need them, you also don't need your CD ROM after installing the right software. OVERVIEW Hornet Folder: (example)   CAVE: the folder HORNET3 is to be converted into an image file (see above); the image file has to be opened and installed as a 'disk' or 'volume' on your DeskTop prior to running Hornet V.3. The 'B102.MOV' is for personal usage only and must be skipped. © Hans 'Flying Dutchman' van Kampen, May 1997 for CIS: GO MACFUN Forum 100544,1761 or Hans_van_Kampen@compuserve.com
